Constructive Feedback

Constructive Feedback is specific, focused, and observationally-based feedback that is intended to help improve performance. Providing constructive feedback is a proactive way that instructors can constructively challenge and enhance the skills of both students and peers.

Quality constructive feedback is:

  • Focused on describing observable behavior
    • Without attaching judgement, accusations, or generalizations
  • Provides time-sensitive feedback.  Immediate feedback is desirable
  • Paraphrased to clarify
    • Checks for understanding and demonstrates listening
      • “What I hear you say is…”
      • “Tell me what you mean when you…”
      • “Do I understand correctly that you mean…”
  • Utilizes Descriptive Language
    • Explains Why something was better
    • Explains What was better
